Privacy Policy

Kandili is built to be a quiet, trustworthy companion for prayer. Our approach to your privacy is the same: we collect as little as possible, keep your spiritual life on your own device, and never sell your data. This policy explains exactly what happens.

In short: Kandili has no user accounts and no advertising or tracking. Your prayers, settings, and progress are stored on your device, not on our servers. Information only leaves your device for two specific features — fetching the daily readings, and (only if you turn it on) the AI companion — as described below.

1. Who we are

Kandili (“the app”, “we”, “us”) is developed by Selene Apps. This policy applies to the Kandili mobile application.

2. Information stored on your device

The following is saved locally on your device (using the device’s standard app storage) and is not transmitted to us:

Your onboarding answers — your stage on the way, jurisdiction, calendar (Old/New), and chosen prayer rhythm;
Your prayer activity and rhythm progress;
Saved saints and prayers;
App preferences — theme (Candlelit/Parchment) and reminder settings.

Because there are no accounts, this information stays on your device. If you delete the app, it is removed.

3. Information sent when you use certain features

Daily readings & commemorations. To show the correct calendar for your day, the app requests data from orthocal.info. These requests include only the calendar date and which calendar reckoning (Old/New) you use — no personal information.
The AI companion (“Ask”). This feature is optional. When it is enabled and you ask a question, your question and the day’s liturgical context (date, fast, season) are sent to Anthropic (the provider of the Claude AI) to generate a reply. Do not include sensitive personal details in your questions. If the AI companion is not enabled, no question data leaves your device.

4. Information we do not collect

No name, email, phone number, or address;
No precise or background location;
No contacts, photos, or device identifiers for tracking;
No advertising identifiers, and no third-party analytics or ad networks.

5. Notifications

If you turn on reminders, the app schedules gentle daily prayer reminders locally on your device. We do not operate a push-notification server and do not receive any notification data. You can turn reminders off at any time in the app or in your device settings. Permission is only requested when you choose to enable reminders.

6. Subscriptions

If Kandili offers a paid subscription, purchases are processed by Apple through the App Store. We do not receive or store your payment details. Apple’s handling of that transaction is governed by Apple’s privacy policy.

7. Data retention and deletion

Your data lives on your device for as long as the app is installed. To delete all of it, simply delete the app from your device. Requests sent to the services in Section 3 are handled under those providers’ own retention policies.

8. Children’s privacy

Kandili is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

9. Security

Information stored on your device is protected by your device’s own security. Network requests (readings and, if enabled, the AI companion) are made over encrypted (HTTPS) connections.

10. Third-party services

The third parties that may process limited data on our behalf, and their policies, are:

orthocal.info — daily calendar/readings data (orthocal.info);
Anthropic — the AI companion, only when enabled (privacy policy);
Apple — app distribution and subscriptions (privacy policy).

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app evolves. Material changes will be reflected here with a new “Last updated” date.
